The joy and suffering of playing piano

The news of Ezio Bosso’s death is something we were not expecting, although it had been previously disclosed. Maybe because what made him disappear was not a disease we constantly talk about. His illness had been present for years and it was well documented. A neurodegenerative disease took Ezio in May 2020, stealing another incredibly talented artist, and hitting us like an unexpected smack.

Ezio Bosso abandoned his well-deserved stage on the tip of his toes, the same way he conquered it. What we lose, apart from his knowledge and compositions, is his ability to intrigue his fans and others, succeeding, thanks to his strong engagement, the sign of a philosopher of music and life.

Isn’t it true that just a few moments spent listening to some of his music could make you fall in love with the melody, his sense of timing, the anticipations, and the musical silence? It felt like Ezio was breathing music, as the keynotes were reverberating in the air, after coming out from one of his whispers. One can almost imagine these notes happily dancing, because of their possibility, sadly limited in time, to generate a strong memory, always linked to deep emotions.

These feelings were also felt during his speeches, cultural introductions, and considerations, always enriched by his wisdom.

Nine years have passed since his head surgery. A positive experience in fighting head cancer. However, his fate, particularly aggressive, had come out with another tougher challenge: a cureless disease, destined to degenerate and leave Ezio with no chance of survival. This is why we knew how Ezio’s touch of the piano had a different meaning, bringing pain to his body and heart until his last touch was announced in September 2019. What does it feel like, for a musician who is so in love with music and perfect performances, to have that physical inability to express passion and life the way he needs to? We might all remember his need to communicate, despite the hesitation of muscles, the medications, and the fingers’ tissues. And you might have seen his jokes with some musicians, kisses threw to the best-performing ones.

When we feel moved by Ezio’s story and music, an image of his intoxicating and confident smile will surely resurface in our mind, the gesture of a person who lived for the moment and ignored his destiny. That’s when we pretend he left us in the middle of a musical “rest”… a simple moment of silence… That rest IS music. He’ll come back at every <play> to tell us something about him, in other words, music.
